The best way is to let the ends know
the direction of the ball by the signal.
The end should be under the ball the
moment it lands, in order to prevent a
return which would bo likely to lose for
his side all the ground that has been
gained by the kick. The end should be
careful not to allow the opposing back
to dodge outside of him, or overrun the
kick in order to save possible long return
runs through a broken field. He should
also be on the alert for fumbles or muffs
which may give him a chance to make a
touch-down.
The great bulk of the end's work comes
in the defensive game. He is to prevent
the long runs or open plays. The end
should thoroughly understand the differ¬
ent methods of breaking through as laid
down in the previous chapter, although
the problem of getting through is not so
difficult for an end, because his opponent
seldom stands in front of him. The end
