John
Cole.
He
was
born
in
England
1774;
came
to
the
United
States
in
his
boyhood
days
1785;
settled
at
Baltimore,
Md.
He
became
a
musician
and
music
publisher.
He
continued
to
publish
and
compose
music
up
to
the
time
of
his
death,
1855.
It
is
supposed
that
he
composed
this
tune
and
first
published
it
about
1809.
He
was
one
of
the
great
composers
of
sacred
music
in
the
early
part
of
the
19th
Century.
