The
Petersburg
is
one
of
the
old
tunes
of
long
standing
and
was
published
in
the
early
song
books
of
the
Nineteenth
Century,
but
so
far
as
we
have
been
able
to
find
none
of
these
books
give
the
author's
name.
It
has
appeared
in
the
"Sacred
Harp"
from
the
time
of
its
publication
in
1844
by
White
&
King
without
any
change.
It
seems
to
have
a
peculiar
run
of
its
own,
and
while
it
is
a
little
varied
in
some
respects,
it
is
a
fine
melody,
and
if
properly
rendered,
will
prove
very
satisfactory.
No
trace
of
the
words
can
be
found
in
books
we
have
consulted.
