Babel's
Streams
is
one
of
the
oldest
melodies.
It
is
strongly
claimed
that
the
music
and
words
came
from
the
Welch
musicians.
It
is
in
several
of
the
music
books
of
Billings,
Holder,
Hall,
Ingalls,
and
others
in
the
first
part
of
the
Nineteenth
Century.
Also
in
the
"Southern
Harmony,"
by
William
Walker,
1835,
page
52.
It
is
believed
the
words
were
also
composed
by
the
authors
of
the
music.
Evidently
the
words
are
based
on
the
imprisonment
of
the
Children
of
Israel
while
they
were
in
captivity
at
Babylon.
